Monument to Martemyanov in Kemerovo

On June 12, 2009, on the Pritomskaya embankment in Kemerovo, a grand opening took place for the great Kemerovo resident – aerobatic pilot Vladimir Martemyanov.
The authors of the monument are sculptor E.M.Tishchenko, architects A.I.Klimov and S.P.Fedotov, designers G.V.Gaifulin and N.S.Chernov.

Vladimir Davydovich Martemyanov (1936-1970), native and honorary citizen of Kemerovo, Honored Master of Sports. He began his ascent to the heights of aerobatic sports in 1962, when he was invited to the USSR national team. And already in 1966 he was waiting for a triumph at the World Cup – he became the absolute champion (the first for our country). In total, he has 24 gold and 5 silver medals won in various competitions.

On April 13, 1970, in preparation for the next world championship in the city of Essentuki, a tragedy happened at the training camp before the next world championship. During a training flight, the aircraft’s wing was torn off due to overload. Turning over in the air, it pierced the cockpit canopy and hit the pilot on the head. The death of the pilot was instantaneous.
In addition to the monument, in Kemerovo a street, a school, a parachute club are named after Martemyanov, there is his museum. His “combat friend” was also immortalized – the Yak-18PM aircraft, on which the pilot flew.
