Great Falls in Barcelona, Catalan Cultural Heritage

In the beautiful and expansive Ciutadella Park in Barcelona, stands a colossal monument of great beauty. It is not for nothing that it is classified as a property of interest to the local population.
We are talking about the Great Falls, an architectural complex in which the art of sculpture and the ingenuity of water create a scene in which sound and color are perfectly combined.
History of the Great Falls of Barcelona
The large monumental waterfall or waterfall is located in the Parque de la Ciudadela of Barcelona, located between Paseo Pujads, Paseo Picasso and Wellington Street, in the famous Ciutat Vella district of the Catalan capital.
The name of this park comes from the place of its construction, as it occupies the territory previously occupied by a military citadel of the eighteenth century.
The Great Falls is a monumental group of many different sculptures, fountains and fountains that will delight visitors to this place.

It was built according to a project by master builder Josep Fonzeri, between 1875 and 1888.
It should also be mentioned that in the hydraulic engineering project it was the work of a young architect of that time, the great Antoni Gaudi.
But also the Monumental Falls set consists of a series of sculptures created by very different artists of the time.
The large waterfall has a neoclassical style and is made of limestone. Its structure consists of a central triumphal arch topped with a quadriga drawn by four horses, on the sides there are two smaller arches, of which the staircase leading to the pond is divided into two levels.

Highlights of the great falls
The Great Falls is composed of a large number of elements and sculptures, which emphasize the following:
- Quadriga of Aurora. This sculptural composition, made of golden cast iron, is a quadriga drawn by four horses, in which it represents a sculpture of a woman such as Aurora, who carries a torch in her right hand. This set was created by Rossend Novas.
- The Birth of Venus is the main sculptural set of the Great Falls, It represents the birth of the goddess by her name, who emerges from the shell with her arms outstretched to the sky and is accompanied by two naiads, which are located at their feet. This set is located on a series of rocks from which the first beak of the waterfall emerges. This impressive work was created by sculptors Venancio and Agapito Vallimiana in white marble.
- Anfifita and Neptuno. Anfítrite is a sculpture representing the wife of Neptune, in a semi-nude pose and in one of his hands he carries a spear, on the other side, which forms a pair, Neptune appears, represented by his symbolic trident. Both sculptures are in white marble, Anfítrite is the work of Josep Gamot and Neptuno Manel Fuchs.
