Altai Mountain Carved Icon
Altai Mountain Carved Icon of Virgin with a Child was made by a nun of Barnaul Znamensky Monastery Felofeya. The rock carved icon is next to St. John the Theologian monastery of Chemal region, on the Patmos island of Altai Republic, Russia. Once, in one of the rocks of the abbess of the female monastery nun Nadezhda saw the image of the Virgin, which later was carved by nun of Barnaul Znamensky monastery – sculptor Felofeya. Currently, St. John the Evangelist church on the island of Patmos is the current women’s hermitage, where services are held regularly. It is opened to all comers.
Patmos Island (another name – Makarios) is located in the middle of the river Katun. The beauty to the rocky island give trees, shrubs and flowers blooming from early spring to late autumn. On the island was erected St. John the Evangelist Church. This place is special, it is linked to traditions and mystical legends.
The island was named Patmos because August 9, 1855, it was consecrated by bishop Parfeny in honor of disciple of Jesus Christ – the Apostle John the Divine, to whom in the Mediterranean Sea, on the island of the same name, was revealed by the Lord revelation that allowed to write the Apocalypse. John in a vision dreamed about two temples, as if hovering over the water: one in the Mediterranean and the other at the opposite end of the earth, in the Altai province. Now the name Patmos have two islands – one in the Mediterranean and the other in the Altai.
The temple has become a symbol of the Christian faith which preaches love for others, humility, peacefulness and tolerance. The majestic and beautiful Altai Mountains – one of the jewels in the crown of God’s creations. In the history of the small island of the Katun river marvelous beauty of nature combined with the beauty of the spirit.
